Why did elsa do that?

Im currently binge watching 1883, im at the episode with the tornado......why did elsa in the middle of a tornado screaming her head off decide to kiss the kimanchee(pretty sure i spelt that wrong)like it just seems so random and kinda forced by the writers, just didnt make sense to me.
