Insurance policy was previously cancelled

Hi, I was hoping someone could advise. Back in 2023/2024 with my old car, I was on a pay per mile insurance policy with Bymiles. Around that time I change my car and for a brief period I was an owner of two cars but only driving one.

My new car was also insured by them at the time. As my old car was not in use, the miles tracking device had turned off, therefore in December 2023 they cancelled my policy.

At the time I didn't give this any thought (very stupid of me indeed). I had a policy for my new car with the same company which ended in August 2024 after which I moved to Aviva and I did not declare to them that a previous policy of mine had been cancelled.

It only hit me a few days ago when a few of my friends were talking about insurance cancellations and to avoid this at all costs which set off alarm bells for me.

The first thing I did was check if my current policy with Aviva could be amended however when I was trying to change my details they said they wouldn't be able to offer me cover if I change my details to say I've had car insurance cancelled previously. At which point, my first thought was to cancel the Aviva policy and take out a new policy with another provider by declaring the correct information. Thankfully it wasn't too bad as the quote that came back from a comparison website was £120 cheaper than what I paid in August 2024, so even with Aviva's cancellation charge I wouldn't be at a loss.

The main query I have is, how long do I have to keep declaring this? I understand there are some insurance companies that don't ask, there are some that do and comparison website always ask.

Surely whatever datebases this information is stored have to abide by GDPR and they can't penalise you forever. I was lucky this time as the insurance quote was cheaper but in the future I may not be so lucky.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

UPDATE: Just got an email back from Bymiles after having a conversation with them this morning, I have been told that this has been overturned and I no longer need to declare this. Now I feel like a mug for switching policy before hearing from Bymiles. Oh well at least it's some good news.
