Gas line near electrical panel

I had a township code inspector tell me I have to move the gas line for my boiler away from the electrical panel. It's run behind where the electrical panel is mounted to its frame. It's been like that for 15 to 20 years and it was very professionally done and secured properly but he said gas lines can't be anywhere near an electrical panel.

So my plumber gave me a couple options, he said we can move the gas line or maybe we can get away with just leaving it in some kind of conduit, does anybody know if something like that could be approved?
