My issue with the Stormlight archive

So admittedly I have a much dimmer view of Sanderson than many in this sub, but I’ll be forever grateful that he finished off WoT (though I’ll never forgive Mat’s boots monologue).

I’m finishing up the tome that is Wind and Truth and I came to a realization. One reason I’ve found it a slog is because I don’t like any of the main characters. I don’t find any of them particularly complicated or, at times, believable. And as a combat veteran who suffers from PTSD, I appreciate Sanderson’s take on it and depression through Kaladin but it becomes a chore to read after this entire series. He’s just not likable. Neither is Shallan.

In fact the characters I do adore — Rock, Syl, the Sword (oh I really love the sword in this one and the audiobook narrator does him beautifully), Wit, Szeth, and Lift — are all tertiary characters.

So I find myself reading for Easter eggs for the broader cosmere tie ins, the world building which no fantasy author can really match Sanderson’s scope, and enjoying the side characters POVs but not really caring all that much about the main character’s plot arcs or even the main plot line if I’m being honest.

But perhaps that just shows Sanderson’s skill as a writer because I’m still willing to get through this meandering slog to finish up this part of the Stormlight archive series because I do want to know how it ends and for the other stuff mentioned above.

What do yall think? Who are y’all’s favorite or least favorite character(s) in the Stormlight Archive?
