I just finished my first Metroidvania (my thoughts)

TL:DR: The game is amazing, great combat, weapons, exploration and atmosphere, the bosses were top-notch, and it's a great introduction to the genre if you're coming from Soulsborne/Souls-likes. Just wished there was NG+, but it's a great game nonetheless.

I have to say that prior to getting the game I've seen plenty of discourse surrounding its quality and several comparisons (especially towards Blasphemous), most of them fair.

I've found out about this game by pure chance and what teally hooked me was the not-so-shy Bloodborne influence.

I decided to bite the bullet and finished it in 20 hours across three days.

Having no background of other Metroidvanias I have to say: This game is a masterpiece.

Perhaps my opinion will change once I dwell into other juggernauts of the genre, but for now this was an amazing experience.

The story, although a little too convoluted is quite intriguing and fitting pieces together through the notes scattered across the game felt really good.

The combat is just SO FUCKING GOOD, I felt right at home even though it was a 2D platafformer, the weapons felt amazing, its combos, the weapon arts, the spells, the guns, YOU CAN EVEN TURN INTO A BEAST, it felt amazing.

The bosses were absolutely fantastic, some of them felt brutal the first time, but in true soulsborne fashion, you can come later once you're stronger and more experienced, my favorites have to be Manfredd, Nyxaroth and Medeya.

The atmosphere is what I love the most about this game, the setting is my favorite in all pieces of media, and the Lovecraftian elements only made it better.

The music is insane, while I don't think it can easily rival that of FromSoft's titles it comes pretty damn close, it really sets the tone for each fight and area you're traversing.

Overall is a fantastic game, I've heard plenty of bugs and features were added since release so my experience might have been far better than someone who played on release, but as of now this game is extremely good, and I'd say is a great introductio to the genre (especially if you're coming from Souls titles).

I'd give the game an 8/10. The only drawbacks to me are the absence of NG+ and sometimes the inputs didn't dial in correctly or simply weren't read at all, but it might have been my system rather than the game.

Can't wait to play it again.
