Background music

In yesterdays Queen Vic scene... They were playing Robbie Williams. I was just wondering is the music playing in the background as the actors are doing their scenes or is it added post production or in editing etc? Just wondering if anyone knew? Just it seemed fairly loud but it was difficult knowing between the two especially with modern technology.

Also, is someone employed just to pick the music for the scene?
