Mexico... wtf?
As a US freight forwarder, I struggle so much with getting reliable communication from Mexico. Has anyone found a way to make it work?
At my current, midsized forwarder, we have three partners we work with in Mexico. All are equally terrible... No responses to emails. They take days to return quotes. Phone calls just lead to "yeah yeah we'll email you the price/update." Prices are shockingly high or totally unstable from day to day. We get no updates about shipment status, even on urgent, high priority moves. We found out about extra charges weeks after we've already billed our customer.
I even gave Mexico two amazing sales leads to sell their own business. I've followed up to see if I could help and got no reply.
I've tried cultivating a personal relationship via Teams calls and WhatsApp. I got to know management. I followed proper escalation pathways in my company and theirs. Intenté hacer negocios en español en lugar de inglés. Nothing works.
It was like this at my previous forwarder who has their own offices in Mexico. My coworkers who worked at the world's biggest forwarders say it was like this everywhere.
I work well with other countries with notoriously difficult business climates. Mexico is the only nut I can't crack after 9 years of this. I have so many opportunities to Mexico that my current customers are practically begging me to handle. But I can't even get a quote done...
Has anyone figured out how to work effectively with Mexico?
