Seven of twelve excommunicated

Seven of the first twelve apostles in the Church in the modern dispensation were excommunicated. From my primary lessons, I believe only one of Christ’s original twelve would have qualified for excommunication (had he not had suffered suicide). What does the Church make of this, and is there a faithful explanation around why there was such turmoil in early modern Church?
