Why was Charlotte and Trey's sex life dead again?

Just because they couldn't have PIV sex? There are SO many ways to be sexually intimate that don't include PIV. Couldn't be have given her a hand job or gone down on her, used dildos etc? Upon like the 5th rewatch it just hit me that this doesn't make any sense.
