The Fish Purse and Miranda’s Personality Shift

I, like many of us, have always loved the first SATC movie. The range of emotions and the bonds the ladies have… it hits me in the heart every time I watch, even to this day. However, there is one moment that pulls me out of my feelings-fest every time - and no, it’s not Charlotte pooping her pants.

It’s Miranda carrying the wicker fish purse.

The first few times I saw it, I only noticed it when she and Charlotte were rushing to stuff the honeymoon rose petals into it before Carrie walked into the bedroom. I wondered, “Why would a resort put a weird fish basket on the bed?” Then eventually I saw it: Miranda brought that purse with her. She carried it around. And since the ladies joined the Mexico trip last-minute, I can assume that she already had it in her possession. Miranda bought that fish purse long ago.

Which to me, is the beginning of the major shift in personality we eventually see in Miranda in AJLT.

This purse is NOT Miranda. Miranda has typically gone for sleek, sometimes androgynous, angular, sometimes very David Bowie-esque. But that fish purse… it’s ain’t it.

The wicker animal purses were apparently a big deal in the 1950’s, which again, is SO not Miranda.

Did I solve the mystery? Is this wicker fish purse the beginning of the end of Miranda as we knew her?
